RELUCTANT DEFERENCE

Reluctant Deference: Welcome

The heart can think of no devotion
Greater than being shore to ocean -
Holding the curve of one position,
Counting an endless repetition.

"Devotion" by Robert Frost

RELUCTANT DEFERENCE explores the idea of being devoted to something or someone without choice. Why are we expected to show respect and devotion to family members, elders, teachers, even if they mistreat us? Why do we stay in relationships despite negative treatment? In the way as the waves are constantly ‘trying’ to reach shore despite the fact that they have no control over their motion, human beings can become consumed by obligation and commitment, regardless of personal health or gain. This piece follows this increasingly desperate search for love and approval through the push and pull of ocean waves.
